Artist Statement

As a child, I lied profusely.  The world wasn't interesting to me. There was too much mundane in middle class suburbia.  I took it upon myself to spice up life and stretch the truth for the sake of a good story.  I suppose this was the start of my love for creation.  As it turned out, my folks weren't huge fans of my imagination or the lies that my imagination crafted.  Guilt, shame, and a late blooming conscience gradually took hold and I curbed my desire to entertain through blatant lying. The work created now has varied purposes and subject matter but the underlying narrative is constant.  That subversive undercurrent of continuity resides in my process.  As some sort of self-imposed punishment for years of lying, I force myself to look for the truth.  Paint is pushed around until I arrive at the truth as I see it. Hours are spent deliberating over which color the next brush stroke should contain.  The result is rather photo realistic, yet the technique is undisciplined and loose.  The greatest irony of the work is in seeking exact truth, I am constantly aware that I am creating an illusion or lie. Truth can be existential, postmodern, the nucleus of enlightenment and elusive, but perhaps the real question is, "can it be absolute."
